PHOTO BY JAMES NAGEL - I SEE IT AS "CONTRIBUTERS TO THE LANDSCAPE"
(AND HOPEFULLY A TEASE TO THE UPCOMING SHOW "SAUCY" A RESPONSES TO OUR BURING MAN EXPERIENCE: THURSDAY NOV. 6TH TALK AT 5:15)
If there was a theme to this years Junior Art Portfolio Review It was UNDERUSES, USES and ABUSES of the resources of the art department. Where is that line and do we need to draw one at all? Theses are the kids of questions we are able to ask ourselves. As a small school we are in a unique situation of being able to have meaningful dialogue about the direction of our department and the ways in which we work.
On Friday as we gather to review, it was obvious that as students and artists we all make work in very different ways. Some spend time in solo pursuits were others find home in the collaboration of the community. Some stick to a concentration and others seek out the support and knowledge around them to branch across mediums. This whole mess of opinions led me to better examine and understand my way of working. I find my self the latter of the two (the get everyone involved, learn from all and explore the possibility of the studio at large). I feel the best moments are when we are look at each other as one studio or department. We are not painters, printmakers, photographers, digital artist and yes I will even through in the true bastard child: the ceramicists (you know I love you nick). The real magic happens over a glass of sangria where all ideas, ways of practicing and seeing are brought together. I feel best about my process when I am able to talk about my projects and encourage others to get involved. I thrive on the studio setting and although the work feels and is very much my own I do recognize the collaboration the studio allows.
This blog is an acknowledgment of those that add to the dialogue, creating an important layer to my work. Students, teachers, visiting artists and guest all stand as a backdrop animated and sparkling; contributors to the landscape that makes our art department one I am happy to be apart of. I am impressed with our community and hope this open dialogue and structures such as Junior art portfolio continue to provide a stage where we can try to answer both personal practice questions and address larger school concerns.
